Monday, Day Two
This morning started out very cool, foggy, and the feeling of a late September morning. After wiping the sleep out of their eyes, each camper was eager to start the day. Some fun games of BUMP and TIPS occurred before breakfast test and shots. Breakfast consisted of cereal, oatmeal, and some great tasting muffins. After breakfast was finished the campers participated in stations where the fundamentals of basketball were specifically reviewed and then practiced with instructional assessment and assistance.
Teams were then created and "game time" had officially started. At 11:10AM, the sun broke out of the clouds, making staff and campers pleasantly surprised. Free time from 2:30-4:30PM gave each camper the option to swim, shoot hoops, ride the slip and slide, and catch up on their text messaging. Mr. Chris Dudley himself has been present today, he even found time to make a few trips down the slip and slide. All is well at camp, and we look forward to creating some more great memories.
More soon!

Camp, Day One
Dudley Camp Day One,
As parents came to drop off their loved ones, staff eagerly awaited their arrivals. With a large number of new campers, the excitement of camp was in the air. It didn’t take long for old friends to become quickly acquainted. After each camper was processed and checked-in, some structured games and basketball related activities were offered. Dinner for night one consisted of hamburgers, French fries, potato salad, and a low sugar (of course) ice-cream bar, which the campers quickly devoured.
With the change of schedule and high level of activity, there have been many low sugar readings this afternoon and evening. Something that the wonderful staff here at camp are prepared to quickly handle. Have a great night and expect more to come tomorrow.
When T1000 (David Schafer) was asked about his first day he replied, “Today started out rough with a painful finger jam, but I am looking forward to the rest of camp”.
Goodnight from Cedar Ridge,

Good, Clean Fun: A Car Wash Fundraiser
Giving back to a cause you believe in: it's rewarding and important work, but it can be alot of fun too!

Check out this great example of how you and your friends can directly help kids who have diabetes:

On March 17, 2010, Micaela, an 8-year camper of the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp, held a car wash as part of her Senior Project. Her goal was to raise money to send a child to the Camp so they could have the same awesome experience she had each year while at camp. She organized a group of volunteers, made signs, and got all the supplies needed for the car wash. Although the weather was not ideal for a car wash, it turned out to be a huge success ... Micaela raised $500! Thank you, Micaela and friends for all your hard work in organizing this event; you did a great job!

May: People Who Inspire Us
Joey Seber, CDF's Program Director, recently participated in an Oregon State University class, "Exercise for Chronic Disease Management". Students in this class are going for degrees such as teaching, medicine, and sports & medicine. Their current focus is on diabetes, and Kerry, the Associate Professor teaching the class, brought in a panel of people affected by the disease to share their experiences with the class and to participate in a Q&A session.
This was a great opportunity for future doctors, teachers and therapists to gain real-life insight into what it's like to live with diabetes. Here are a few of the panelists who inspired the students with their personal stories:
Jackson - he was diagnosed at the age of 10 with type 1 diabetes and went on a pump at 15-years-old. He was a chef in Portland and decided to go back to school at Oregon State to study Nuclear Engineering ... a great example of living active with diabetes!
Bev - is the mother of Kerry. Bev is a retired nurse and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at the age of 55. A piece of advice she gave the class was, when dealing with their patients or students, "to listen to them; they are very aware of their bodies."
Ben - was diagnosed with diabetes when he was a freshman in high school. He graduated from Concordia College on May 1st with a degree in education, and is currently a student teacher at Wilsonville High School. He has attended the Chris Dudley Basketball Camp since he was 14, and is now part of the Dudley staff. We are very proud of you, Ben!
